Why Read the Bible?
Deuteronomy 17:18-20 says, “18And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites: 19And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: 20That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.”
Modern-day Christians in America have developed the habit of only reading the Bible at church, becoming part-time believers rather than full-time. We have allowed church to become the middle ground between us and God rather than develop an intimate relationship with God in the secret place through prayer and reading His Word. We must be willing to hear God speak to our spirit in prayer and be open to Him speaking to us via scripture. There is so much life and power in the Word of God that without reading it, understanding it, and applying it, we will spiritually die! We must read the Bible.
According to Deuteronomy 17:18-20, the Bible discusses the importance of reading the law everyday, which can reflect our need for reading God’s Word. We will learn to fear, or reverence, God, obey His Word, remember His Word, remove pride and establish humility, be sound in decision-making, and live a long life. These are some great promises, but in order for God to do His part, we must first do ours. Instead of being confused or arrogant, we must be humble and allow the Word of God to direct our paths. We must be willing to listen to God and follow His direction intead of doing simply what we want! The only way to do this is by reading the Word of God ourselves. Therefore, do not wait for the preacher to preach on a Wednesday or Sunday. Do not just take a pastor’s word for it. Pick up the Bible and read it for yourself. Then, you will find new life in Christ!
