The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
Genesis 1:2 says, “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon (hovered over) the face of the waters.”
The Spirit of God was seen on earth in the beginning as He moved upon the face of the waters. “Spirit” comes from the Hebrew word “ruach”, which literally translates into “wind, breath or mind” of God. God left His throne in heaven and came to earth, and He began to hover over the waters. When He looked down upon the waters, which came from heaven, He seen His reflection in it. His reflection was light because in Him there is no darkness at all. So, when He spoke light into existence, He spoke from His Spirit nature, who He was, to reflect in the nature. He formed what we see from our perspective so that when we see His creation we cannot help but identify it came from Him! The Holy Spirit allows us to see God’s reflection and His willing to put His mark on everything to preach to us His realness!
Exodus 35:30-35 says, “30And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel (meaning “in the shadow”, not Moses or Abraham) the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship; 32And to devise curious works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, 33And in the cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of wood, to make any manner of cunning work. 34And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. 35Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.” The spirit of God filled Bezaleel to anoint him in workmanship, to design the tabernacle in reflection of what was seen in heaven. The purpose of the Spirit of God on earth is to enable us to inherit on earth what is in heaven, to reflect it as a mirror.
The Holy of Holies was entered into one day of the year by the High Priest on the Day of Atonement, a day for the entire nation to enter into prayer and fasting. The High Priest would shed off all of his garments, only going before the LORD with linen garments. He would make sacrifices for the entire nation. It was a dark room, and the only piece of furniture in that place was, again, the Ark of the Covenant, which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwells, or is enthroned, between the cherubim (2 Samuel 6:2). If the sacrifices of the high priest on the Day of Atonement were accepted, the nation of Israel would know it because God’s presence would come down, and when He comes, He does so in power and authority! A light would fill the Holy of Holies because God Himself is the light of that room, not the sun or a golden lamp stand. The children of Israel looked upon the Holy of Holies, and when God’s presence filled that room, it would expand like a lung, and the sound that was made in the Hebrew was “rooach,” which is the “breath of God.”
2 Peter 1:20-21 says, “20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” Prophecies came in the Old Testament as people were moved on by the Holy Ghost. It was not spoken according to their will, but according to God’s! In other words, one of the main purposes of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament was to bring the will of God upon the earth, to lay a foundation for Christ to come in the form of human flesh, become the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, and empower us through His resurrection to become sons and daughters of God! God needed prophets to proclaim His good news on the earth, which cannot be done in their own human flesh, but by His Spirit!
Mark 12:36 says, “For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.” David prophesied this under the unction of the Holy Spirit, that the Father said to Jesus to sit on the right hand of position, power and authority until He made His enemies a footstool, which is upon the neck of the adversary. This Old Testament scripture is the most quoted in the New Testament. Now, we can be seated in heavenly places knowing the Father has already conquered our enemies through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, spoiling every principality and power!
Hebrews 4:5-11 indicates that the Holy Ghost spoke in Psalm 95:7-11, prophesying how the children of Israel would relive the days of restlessness and wandering if they chose to walk in disobedience and rebellion, putting a deaf ear to God like they did in the wilderness. The author of Hebrews reemphasizes this Biblical truth that if we harden our hearts today that we too can be cut off from the presence of God just as Israel was in the wilderness! Isaiah 63:10 (NASB) says, “But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them.” Rebellion grieves the Holy Spirit and it causes God to fight against you rather than for you.
Acts 1:16 says, “Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.” David prophesied by the Holy Ghost several things concerning the death of Jesus, one of which being Judas’ betrayal and replacement. What was prophesied under the old covenant was fulfilled in the new one.
According to 1 Samuel 10:10, when the Holy Spirit (Spirit of God) came upon Saul, he prophesied among the company of prophets. Although he was called to be a king, he began to moved under the anointing of the Holy Spirit to prophecy. The Holy Spirit will cause you to act and speak outside of your nature so that you can activate what God wills to do and is speaking from heaven for earth!
According to Daniel 4:8-9, King Nebuchadnezzar recognized the “spirit of the gods” was in Daniel because of a dream he interpreted. In Daniel 5:11, 14, Belshazzar recognized the same thing, which is why he called for Daniel to interpret the writing on the wall! He only understood from his cultural view, but in reality, this was the Spirit of God upon Daniel’s life to have the wisdom and discernment to comprehend the supernatural and understand the meaning of dreams and visions. The purpose of the Holy Spirit was to reveal the true God to a foreign empire and activate His will in these governments.
