The Fourfold Mission of the Holy Spirit, Pt. 2: To Guide
When we choose to guide ourselves, we will oftentimes find ourselves committing a multitude of mistakes and failures, going to places that we will later on regret. However, when we choose rather to go to God’s Word and prayer for direction, His Word will be a “lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). If the marvelous light of this scripture counsels me, then I know that I will be alright and make sound decisions that will reflect God’s will for my life!
The purpose of the Holy Spirit is not lead us into destruction, lies or deception, but to guide us into all truth. Even John 14:17 says that the Spirit of truth will “dwell with you and be in you.” His Holy Spirit desires to not only be with us, but in us, becoming part of us so that we can totally be like Jesus Christ. By deciding to follow after man’s philosophies, idea or prideful knowledge, we can build our lives on a foundation that will eventually crumble and fall when troubles and trials come our way. Those things can pollute the power and strength of God’s Word from operating and functioning in our lives. Despite what many postmodern thinkers of today’s time believe, absolute truth does exist, and it is founded in the Bible, where there is no contradiction or heresy. John 14:6 says, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Jesus is simply the truth, and truth can never be discussed without Jesus being made mention somewhere in the conversation. Once you encounter the true presence of an all-loving, all-powerful God, then you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free (John 8:32). People can cover up the truth with lies, but lies will never produce freedom. Only the Spirit of truth can dwell in you, delivering you from every bondage of sin or deception that can hold you back from your destiny and purpose in the LORD!
The reason why the Holy Spirit can guide us into all truth is because, according to John 14:26, He “teaches us all things.” God’s precious Spirit convicts us of our sins to know the truth so that we can identify what true morality is. He enables us to distinguish good from evil so that we do that which is pleasing in God’s sight. 1 John 2:27 says, “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.” The anointing we have received is the Holy Spirit, and He teaches you all things! He abides in us, meaning that He just doesn’t visit us on Sunday mornings, but He resides within us daily! The word “anoint” means “to paint” because His presence covers you, He changes the look and identity in such a way that you cannot recognize what you look like. The way to get to oil is for olives to be crushed and bruised! You may go through dying to self, but it produces a valuable and precious anointing of God that cannot be limited. It is what keeps the lamps trimmed and burning! All you need is the Spirit of Truth. Man can teach you a great deal of things in this world, but it pales in comparison to when God teaches you all things!
The Holy Spirit operates in the spirit of holiness, which does not bind you up, but it sets you free! The reason is because teaching destroys unbelief, and just as the Holy Spirit becomes our guide, He destroys the lies of the enemy that can hold us captive or even blind us to the truth! According to Romans 1:7, the spirit of holiness is why Christ resurrected from the dead! Through the Holy Spirit resting up us, we are resurrected into new creatures in the sight of God!
Finally, the last thing that enables the Holy Spirit to guide us is because He brings into our remembrance everything Jesus said to us. While we experience those moments of difficulty and attacks of the adversary, the Holy Spirit revives the scriptures into our memory so that we can speak them, meditate on them and obey them. The Spirit of God will never cause you to remember your past sins or failures and condemn you for something that the LORD has already forgiven you of, but He will allow you to recall to your memory what God has done and spoken to you so that you can press forward into the future He has ordained for you. Spiritually, it is like you are cruising on the highway of holiness and you need your rearview mirror as you drive. If you stare at what is behind you, you will wreck shortly out ahead of you and never reach the destination God is calling you to. However, if you keep driving, but you never look at your mirrors, then something can come up from behind you and also cause you to wreck. Those rearview mirrors are not something you keep your focus on, but its purpose is for you to glance at. We are not to dwell on or in our past because our past does not determine our future, but we should never forget the testimony that God has worked in our lives because it is our testimony that shows people that they can make it and overcome too! Our history is not to condemn us or dictate our next steps we make, but it is to honor God for His power of deliverance that He has worked on our behalf!
So, the Holy Spirit desires to guide us into all truth by teaching us all things and bringing into our remembrance everything that the LORD has ever said or done, both in our lives and in the Bible. We can try to be lead by our carnal wisdom, but we can fall significantly that way, but when we choose to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can have a greater level of discernment and live a life that puts a smile on our Savior’s face. It is not about pleasing men, but pleasing God!
