A Trip to the Potter’s House, Pt. 2

Jeremiah 18:1-6 says, “1The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. 3Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. 4And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. 5Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 6O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.”

Do Not “Crave” To Be Honored!

Matthew 23:6-8 says, “They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men. But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.”

Honor One Another

1 Corinthians 12:19-26 says, “19If they were all one member, where would the body be? 20But now there are many members, but one body. 21And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; or again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; 23and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable, 24whereas our more presentable members have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, 25so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.”

A Culture of Honor

Proverbs 9:7-9 (NASB) says, “7 He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself, And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself. 8 Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you. 9 Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning.”

What is “Honor”?

Matthew 15:1-9 (TPT) says “Then the Pharisees and religious scholars came from Jerusalem and approached Jesus with this question: 2 “Why do your disciples ignore the traditions of our elders? For example, they don’t ceremonially wash their hands before they eat bread.” 3 Jesus answered, “And why do you ignore the commandment of God because of your traditions? 4 For didn’t God say, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Whoever abuses or insults his father or mother must be put to death?’ 5 “But you teach that it’s permissible to say to your parents when they are in financial need, ‘Whatever gift you would have received from me I can keep for myself, since I dedicated it as an offering to God.’ 6 This doesn’t honor your father or mother. And you have elevated your tradition above the words of God. 7 Frauds and hypocrites! Isaiah described you perfectly when he said:  8 These people honor me only with their words, for their hearts are so very distant from me. 9 They pretend to worship me, but their worship is nothing more than the empty traditions of men.”

What is Sin, Pt. 3

If you are still trying to distinguish whether some action is a sin or not, let’s go to the text where it says, “Whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Romans 14:23).

What is Sin, Pt. 2

If you have a question in your mind whether or not something is a sin, you must ask yourself whether or not we are misusing God’s creation to give glory to someone else, ourselves, or the devil. Let’s take Galatians 5:19-21 for example. It says, “19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Let’s group these sins into some categories that define what sin really is.

What is Sin, Pt. 1

What is sin? Sin is not merely a list of do’s and don’ts. It is not my opinion of what sin is because that seems to be what it is in this postmodern world in which we live today. Truth is not whatever you want it to be. It is not like God’s standard is higher or lower from one person to the next. The scripture serves as the standard in which we are commissioned by God to live. Truth is the very foundation of the Word of God. We must live by it in order to walk in truth and avoid sin. The reason why the world hates the church so much is because of the truth we claim and proclaim through the Bible. It defines what sin is, and we must take notice.
