A Victim Mentality
1 Thessalonians 5:14 says, “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.”
The worst mentality to have in the church is a victim mentality. People with this mindset are convinced that everyone is out to take advantage of them. They only criticize and judge, seeking to find the negatives rather than the positives. They always depend on others to pray them out of difficult situations since they are not rooted in a consistent prayer life to the LORD. They hop from church to church due to “church hurt”, never trusting or building relationships with anyone outside of their family or inner circle out of fear of reliving those past hurts. Most of these hurts could have been created in their own minds or initiated from a lie of the enemy. They refuse to walk in repentance because they never see themselves doing wrong, becoming oblivious to the conviction of the Holy Spirit. It is a sad and dangerous place to live because you refuse to walk in victory, overcoming through the very blood that Jesus shed, which spoiled principalities and powers!
Nonetheless, the scripture says to “comfort the feebleminded” and “support the weak”. This does not mean we baby everyone who claims to be a child of God since they are going through something because it is time to grow up! However, a system is set for restoration, deliverance and strength, giving leeway for the Holy Spirit to complete His role as a Comforter. We show them in the Word how they can walk in consistent and perpetual victory, teaching them how to be equipped with the mind of Christ. If people are not careful, a victim mentality will fantasize a nonexistent church hurt that keeps them plagued with spiritual leprosy out of the fear of man, but a conquering mentality will launch the church in advancement of the kingdom through the fear of God. It causes division, limiting them in walking in the fulness of Christ and the potential of heaven. If you have been battling a victim mentality, I encourage you to lay it at the feet of Jesus and begin to see everything the way God sees it! Allow the mind of Christ to give you a new vision and direction, building an unshakeable, unstoppable faith in Him!
